Impending Change: BC Transit Regionalization or Grouping

BC Transit, operated by the Province of BC, has approved a strategy to consolidate operating contracts by region. As a result, management of the Merritt Transit System will transition from the Nicola Valley Transportation Society to a regional or grouped operator. The goal of this change is to enhance efficiency and effectiveness while ensuring economically sustainable operations for taxpayers.

Currently, BC Transit is in communication with local governments and have set a completion date for municipal engagement for late 2025. Key municipal concerns include retaining local employment, rising transit costs, and the functionality of a regionalized transit system. As of fall 2024, the City of Merritt remains in discussions with BC Transit to clarify how the transition will unfold.
