Our team provides urban and community planning and development services, recreation, and essential services, including utilities (water, wastewater and sewer), solid waste, roads, and parks. We maintain public infrastructure and provide emergency services through the Fire Service, Emergency Management and provide support for the RCMP and community policing. As well, we ensure regulations and statutory reporting requirements and that the organization runs in a way that provides value to our employees and the community.

Instructor: Babysitter’s Course

Join our team of instructors in our Recreation Department.

Certifications:

  • Certification in CPR and First Aid
  • Teaching or training certifications are a plus.

Professional Experience:

  • Substantial experience in childcare, preferably with diverse age groups.
  • Previous experience as a babysitter, nanny, or child care provider.

Teaching Experience:

  • Proven experience in designing and delivering educational programs or courses.
  • Familiarity with effective teaching methodologies for both theory and practical skills.

BABYSITTERS COURSE SYLLABUS

Babysitter’s Course Syllabus:

Introduction to Babysitting:

  • Overview of the babysitter’s role and responsibilities.
  • Importance of professionalism and communication.

Child Development:

  • Understanding the different developmental stages of children.
  • Age-appropriate activities and play.

Safety and First Aid:

  • Basic first aid techniques (CPR, choking response, wound care).
  • Childproofing the environment.
  • Fire safety and emergency evacuation procedures.

Health and Nutrition:

  • Common childhood illnesses and how to handle them.
  • Basic nutrition guidelines for children.

Behavior Management:

  • Positive discipline strategies.
  • Recognizing and addressing challenging behaviors.

Basic Care Techniques:

  • Diapering, feeding, and dressing infants and toddlers.
  • Bedtime routines and sleep safety.

Playtime and Activities:

  • Creative and age-appropriate activities.
  • Outdoor play and supervision.

Communication Skills:

  • Effective communication with parents.
  • Handling challenging conversations.

Babysitter’s Toolkit:

  • What to bring in a babysitting bag (emergency contact list, first aid kit, etc.).
  • Understanding and using household items safely.

Business Basics:

  • Setting rates and negotiating payment.
  • Creating a babysitter’s resume and portfolio.

Practical Experience:

  • Hands-on experience through supervised babysitting sessions.
  • Feedback and debriefing on practical experiences.

Target Student Qualifications & Expectations:

Minimum Age:

  • Typically, babysitters should be at least 13 or 14 years old.

CPR and First Aid Certification:

  • Completion of a recognized CPR and first aid course.

Reference Checks:

  • Provide character references attesting to responsibility and reliability.

Practical Babysitting Hours:

  • Completion of a certain number of supervised babysitting hours (e.g., 10-15 hours).

Interview and Assessment:

  • An interview to assess communication skills, problem-solving, and situational awareness.

Written Exam:

  • A written exam covering the topics from the course syllabus.

Recommendation from Course Instructor:

  • Positive feedback from the babysitter’s course instructor.
