Public Notice is hereby given to the electors of the City of Merritt that an election by voting is necessary to elect 1 Mayor, 6 Councillors and 3 school trustees for a 4-year term commencing November 2026 and ending November 2030, and that the persons nominated as candidates and for whom votes will be received are:

VOTING DATES AND LOCATION

General voting will be open to qualified electors from the City of Merritt on Saturday, October 17, 2026 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm at the Merritt Civic Centre, 1950 Mamette Ave, Merritt, BC.

 

NOTICE OF ADVANCE VOTING

Advance Voting will be available to qualified electors as follows:

Wednesday, October 7, 2026, 8:00 am – 8:00 pm

Merritt Civic Centre, 1950 Mamette Avenue

 

Wednesday, October 14, 2026, 8:00 am – 8:00 pm

Merritt Civic Centre, 1950 Mamette Avenue

 

VOTING BY MAIL BALLOT is available for qualified electors of the City of Merritt. If you wish to vote by mail, please visit merritt.ca/elections or Merritt City Hall to obtain an application to receive a mail ballot package. It is your responsibility to ensure that your completed ballot is delivered to the Chief Election Officer no later than 8:00 pm on General Voting Day, Saturday, October 17, 2026, to be counted.

 

REGISTRATION AT TIME OF VOTING

If you are not on the list of electors, you may register at the time of voting by completing the required application form available at the voting place. To register, you must meet the following criteria:

18 years of age or older on general voting day; and,

A Canadian citizen; and, Resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately preceding voting day; and,

or

Registered owner of real property in the City of Merritt for at least 30 days immediately preceding voting day; and,

Not otherwise disqualified by law from voting.

 

Resident electors will also be required to produce two pieces of identification (at least one of which with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove both residency and identity.

 

Non-resident property electors must produce:

Two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity;

Proof that they are entitled to register in relation to the property; and,

If there is more than one owner of the property, written consent from the majority of the property owners.

The registered owner of real property means, whichever of the following is applicable:

the owner of a registered estate in fee simple of the property, unless another person holds an interest in the property referred to in paragraph (b), (c) or (d);

the holder of the last registered agreement for sale, unless another person holds an interest in the property referred to in paragraph (c) or (d);

the tenant for life under a registered life interest in the property, unless another person holds an interest in the property referred to in paragraph (d);

the holder of a registered lease of the property for a term of at least 99 years.
