Notice of Gate Change at Nicola Lake Dam - May 20, 2020

Notice of gate change at Nicola Lake Dam - May 20, 2020 @ 1:55PM

The City has received notice from the provincial dam operator that a gate change has just been made, to allow an additional 3 cubic metres per second out of the Nicola Lake Dam.  It is anticipated that between 7pm and 11pm this evening, Nicola River levels will rise approximately 3 inches as a result of this change.  It is likely, but not confirmed, that a similar change will be made tomorrow.

We recognize that in yesterday’s release, we stated that a gate change would not likely be made until Thursday, May 21st.  However, after a thorough review of our river system at current levels, as well as discussions with residents in the lowest lying areas, the dam operator, making successive small increases is preferred to making one larger increase tomorrow.  This allows more water to pass, reducing future flood risk, while allowing us to better assess and evaluate the effects of the current change before considering further increases.  It is not anticipated that today’s change or tomorrow’s potential change will cause overland flooding for any residents.

While minor flooding remains a real possibility, we continue to work closely with the dam operator and our joint goal continues to be maximizing the flow through Merritt, without causing any flooding.  We will communicate with you immediately if we receive any new information.
