The Community Charter provides that on or before October 31st in any year, Council may by bylaw, exempt eligible land and/or improvements from municipal property taxes for the following year(s).
- On October 25, 2016, permissive tax exemptions were approved for a four-year period from 2017 through to 2020 – see Bylaw 2215, 2016.
- On October 24, 2017 permissive tax exemptions were approved for a three-year period from 2018 through to 2020 – see Bylaws 2224,2017 2225,2017 and 2226,2017.

Permissive property tax exemptions are provided for non-profit, philanthropic, and charitable organizations. These permissive exemptions are at the discretion of Council and are subject to the City of Merritt’s budgetary constraints. Council may also consider permissive municipal tax exemptions less than 100%.
All organization who received exemptions under the bylaws listed above are required to submit their application for the 2021-2024 exemption period. Application forms can be downloaded HERE.
