Project Background Information

The previous Zoning Bylaw was adopted in 2015. Many of the regulations were no longer conducive to creating the vibrant, growing community that Merritonians would like the community to become. Residents and developers indicated that the previous bylaw needed a refresh. Hearing those requests, City of Merritt staff were tasked with reviewing the bylaw for potential revisions.

On March 4, 2020, staff appeared before Council to provide an initial report. To be financially prudent, City staff agreed to draft a new bylaw in-house, rather than seeking a consultant to assist with the project. Workshops were then held in March to seek input into the development of a new bylaw.

The proposed bylaw was presented to Council on June 30, 2020. Following additional community engagement in July, a Public Hearing was held on August 4th, and then reconvened on August 18th. Following closure of the Public Hearing, Council gave the proposed bylaw Third Reading on August 18th. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure then signed off on the bylaw, and Council adopted it on September 1, 2020.
