The Merritt Fire Rescue Department is a modern progressive department providing services to the City of Merritt and neighboring protection agreement areas as well as Highway Rescue services through PEP (Provincial Emergency Program) to 8800 square kilometers of area surrounding Merritt. In 2007 we responded to 310 calls including: structures, vehicles and interface fires, highway rescues(150), gas emergencies and other public assistance calls. We partner with the Ministry of Forests as an Initial Attack Crew and on fuel reduction projects to protect our community. We also focus on providing public education and inspection services.

Currently the City is served by 30 paid on call and 2 career members.

Holiday Safety Tips:

Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for fire. Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season.

Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.

Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily.

Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, such as the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable heater.

The winter holidays are a time for celebration, and that means more cooking, home decorating, entertaining, and an increased risk of fire due to heating equipment.

And before you head out, or head off to bed:

Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed.

Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.
