City of Merritt Cultural Mapping Project Workshop - August 18, 2010
Recognition for Merritonians of Note
5/13/2010
Recently Council decided to review its street naming policy.  As part of the process, the Heritage Commission was asked to provide Council with names of pioneers to be included on the list of possible street names.  After some initial discussion, the Heritage Commission asked Council for guidelines on what constituted a pioneer.  The dictionary definition of pioneer is "a : a person or group that originates or helps open up a new line of thought or activity or a new method or technical development b : one of the first to settle in a territory"

Following that train of thought, Council is asking the public to suggest names of people of who have made significant contributions to Merritt.  If you think of someone who fits that criteria and deserves recognition (through street naming or some other format), send your nomination in to City of Merritt Council, PO Box 189, Merritt, B.C.  V1K 1B8, or email to info@merritt.ca and put "Pioneer" in the subject line.   You must also include a short write up of what your nominee did for the community to deserve the recognition.

Cultural Mapping - be involved
City
8/18/2010
Recently the City contracted the Arlington Group to conduct its Cultural Mapping Project.  Invitations were sent out to all arts and cultural groups, churches, Nicola Tribal Association, Conayt, NVIT...anyone we could think of that would have something to say about arts and culture in our community.

The first open house was held on Wednesday, June 16th at the Civic Centre.  The Arlington Group explained the project and asked for a simple quesitonnaire to be filled out.  Next the consultants will be conducting a few workshops to explore further what our City has in the way of arts and culture facilities and activities, and where the gaps are.  This is a project that needs information and participation from the broad spectrum of our community, and it isn't too late to get involved.  The next workshop is Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 6:30 pm in Room 4 at the Civic Centre.

Cultural Mapping Presentation will give you a good idea of what the project is about.  If you are interested in participating, or know someone or some group that should, please contact sally@arlingtongroup.ca.

The paper produced by the Arlington Group on the August 18, 2010 City of Merritt Cultural Mapping Project Workshop is now available on the City of Merritt webpage.
