Press Release - Nicola River Flood May, 19, 2017 - 10:00 AM

Merritt — May 19, 2017 — 10:00 AM

Overnight the Nicola River water levels within the boundaries of the City of Merritt, have not changed substantially.

The flooding is a result of higher than average rainfall and rapid melt of a deep snowpack.   The City is continuing to monitor river levels and ensuring that the critical infrastructure is protected and remains operational.

The flooding remains in isolated areas and the major roadways and commercial areas are not impacted.

Due to the high water levels the City has closed Lions Park and Rotary Park to the public.

Residents are reminded that they are responsible for sand bagging their own property.  The City would like to express appreciation to all the community members that have come out to help their neighbours protect their property.  Sand bags and sand are available across from the Merritt Civic Centre.

Residents living in the flooded areas that are concerned for their safety, should call City Hall at  250 378-4224.
