The City of Merritt continues to monitor the water levels in the Nicola River. The warming weather trend expected has the River Forecast Centre looking to upgrade the Nicola River to a flood watch grading.
Water seepage and low level flooding along properties adjacent to the river systems will continue to be observed. A few City streets currently have flood water on them and it is expected that those areas will continue to be affected in the coming week to 10 days.
Due to the high water levels the City has closed Lions Park and Rotary Park to the public.
The City will be doing twice daily press releases at 10 am and 3 pm and will not be doing media interviews unless circumstances drastically change. City staff are monitoring conditions 24/7 as well as ensuring the daily business of the City continues and appreciates the media’s support in this.
Residents are reminded that they are responsible for sand bagging their own property. Sand bags and sand are available in the parking lot across from the Merritt Civic Centre. Residents can call City Hall 250 378-4224 if they have concerns for their safety.
