MP Dan Albas, shares Merritt’s and Princeton’s Story in Parliament… We have momentum, let’s keep it up!
MP Dan Albas Sharing: (Note: open’s into Youtube)
Mr. Speaker, Imagine living in a rural community like Merritt or Princeton, B.C. You work hard, pay your taxes, but see little return from Ottawa. In 2021, these communities were devastated by massive floods. The Prime Minister told them “that he had their backs”. Ministers visit, telling them to hang tight for their new Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund. The municipalities’ apply, jump through every hoop, spending hundreds of thousands in engineering studies only to be denied. Adding insult to injury, communities that never experienced flooding or fires are receiving funds, while Merritt and Princeton are left behind. Every member here should know that people in these communities are angry at these broken commitments. It’s gotten so bad that Merritt has created an e-petition, calling on the Government to honour its promises. I encourage all concerned citizens to support petition e-5135. If being Canadian means anything, it means looking after one another. I fremind the Prime Minister that it is never too late to do the right thing for Merritt and Princeton.
When #Merritt & #Princeton were flooded, Trudeau said publicly he would “have their backs”. Years later, Merritt has started an e-petition to ask the PM to keep his promises. Read and sign the petition here:

Support Merritt’s Flood Mitigation Efforts: Sign the E-Petition
The City of Merritt’s Flood Mitigation team has launched an e-petition calling on the Government of Canada to support the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF) or similar program to support small communities impacted by disasters.
This funding is critical for implementing a comprehensive dike system outlined in the Flood Mitigation Plan, designed to protect Merritt from future flooding events. The petition gives residents, stakeholders, and supporters the opportunity to make their voices heard in Parliament, advocating for federal assistance to ensure the safety and resilience of our community.
Once we reach 500 e-signatures, MP Dan Albas will secure time on the floor of Parliament to advocate on behalf of our entire community, amplifying the voices of those affected by the 2021 Atmospheric River event. Together, we can ensure Merritt’s needs are heard and acted upon at the highest levels of government.
Sign the petition today to help secure essential flood protection and safeguard Merritt’s future.
