GENERAL MATTERS - Delegations and Recognitions

  • Mr. R. Miller made a presentation to Council outlining the process Community Futures Nicola Valley is undertaking for replacement of the currently absent signage at the Destination BC Visitors’ Centre in that the sign would be:
    • A story board for visitors with Tourism Merritt and City of Merritt websites posted
    • Approval from Shared Services BC has been received
    • Cost of and installation of signage approximately $1500.00
    • Maintenance of the sign would be the responsibility of Community Futures Nicola Valley
    • The sign would have an approximate 3 year life span
  • Mr. M. Simpson provided Council with an overview of the Fraser Basin Council

    Ms. T. Thomas presented to Council the Nicola Lake Planning Process and the plan implementation from July 2013 to present including:
    • Shoreline erosion control at Monck Park
    • Eurasian water milfoil inventory
    • Recreation survey
    • Outreach and education technicians
    • Fisheries Utilization Assessment
    • Nicola Water Management Tool  Ms. Thomas requested Council representation on the Committee as well as funding from the City of Merritt for phases 2 & 3 of the project.  Councillor Norgaard volunteered to sit on the committee if Mayor Menard was unavailable

  • Mr. R. McGowan presented to Council and to inform the residents of Merritt what Nicola Valley Fish & Game Club has been doing

    Mr. McGowan suggested it was the desire of the Nicola Valley Fish & Game Club to pay back the pioneers of the Nicola Valley and perhaps a partnership to develop a pond in Central Park for the pioneers to fish and to teach the younger generations how to fish Highlights of the current legal case preventing residents of BC access to what are deemed public lakes by large land owners and that there are only 3 or 4 private lakes in all of Canada was also presented by Mr. McGowan

NOTICES OF MOTION

  •  Councillor Baker made the following Notice of Motion: THAT we support Community Futures Nicola Valley to install a sign at the Information Centre and contribute 1/3 of the funding up to five hundred ($500.00) dollars
  • Councillor Norgaard made the following Notice of Motion: THAT we review the budgetary process for 2016

REPORTS FROM COUNCIL

  • Councillor Christopherson attended the tour of Highland Valley Copper on May 13th, the wine & cheese at the BC Cattleman’s Association AGM on May 21st, the cheque presentation from MLA Tegart for the concession building at Central Park on May 22nd and reminded the public of the student powwow being held at Bench Elementary on May 27th, the Ty Pozzobon PBR on May 30th and the Swinging Fiddles Concert at the Civic Centre on May 31st 
  • Councillor Prowal attended the wine & cheese at the BC Cattleman’s Association AGM on May 21st, the cheque presentation from MLA Tegart for the concession building at Central Park on May 22nd, Public Works open house and met with MP Dan Albas and Minister of Defense Jason Kenney in Kelowna on May 23rd, the Official Grand Opening of Central Park on May 24th and reminded Council of the Adopt-A-Road clean-up on June 29th. Councillor Prowal expressed her concerns for the folks of Cache Creek and area affected by the flash flooding on May 23rd 
  • Councillor Brown attended the tour of Highland Valley Copper on May 13th, NVIT graduation on May 14th,the opening of the Farmer’s Market on May 16th, the wine & cheese at the BC Cattleman’s Association AGM on May 21st, and the cheque presentation from MLA Tegart for the concession building at Central Park on May 22nd 
  • Councillor Goetz gave the latest gas buddy prices; attended the wine & cheese at the BC Cattleman’s Association AGM on May 21st, the cheque presentation from MLA Tegart for the concession building at Central Park and the gathering of the Airstream group pot luck supper on May 22nd, marigold planting at the Love to Dance garden day at the Olde Courthouse and the Public Works open house on May 23rd, and the Official Grand Opening of Central Park on May 24th.  Councillor Goetz expressed his sympathies to the family on the passing of past Fire Chief Don Moyes; and congratulated Luke Pierce on his new position in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice; and asked if there was any assistance the City could offer to Cache Creek after the flash floods on May 23rd.  And remember, Bike 2 Work Week this week
  • Councillor Norgaard attended the Cycling 4 Diversity meeting at City Hall on May 20th, the wine & cheese at the BC Cattleman’s Association AGM on May 21st, planted marigolds at the Love to Dance garden day at the Olde Courthouse and attended the Public Works open house on May 23rd, had a tour of the lacrosse box on May 24th and reminded the public of the student powwow at bench Elementary on May 27th 
  • Councillor Baker attended the “mock accident” produced by the RCMP and Merritt Fire Rescue Department on May 22nd 
  • Mayor Menard commented on the Cache Creek flash flood disaster, on the passing of past Fire Chief Don Moyes and provided an update for Council on the recruitment for another family doctor in Merritt.   Mayor Menard welcomed the Cycling 4 Diversity team to Merritt and road the “Big Bike” on May 20th.  Mayor Menard attended the tour of Highland Valley Copper on May 13th, the Emergency Management Protection meeting and the TNRD Directors meeting on May 14th, welcomed the delegates at wine & cheese for the BC Cattleman’s Association AGM on May 21st, the cheque presentation from MLA Tegart for the concession building at Central Park and the gathering of the Airstream group pot luck supper on May 22nd, Public Works open house on May 23rd and the Official Grand Opening of Central Park on May 24th.  Mayor Menard hosted a drop-in session on May 20th.
