PUBLIC INPUT

  •  Ms. Sheila Curnow spoke to Council regarding Item 8.1 on the agenda urging Council to not support the request for a future application for exclusion from the Agriculture Land Reserve

GENERAL MATTERS - Delegations and Recognitions

  • Mr. V. Kanigan updated Council on the team’s standing and the recognition by other coaches for their skill.  The team was proud to represent Merritt and Zone 2.  Mayor Menard thanked the girls and Councillor Prowal congratulated the girls 
  •  Mr. T. Bennett, District Forest Recreation Officer presented to Council the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations including:
    • What the Ministry does
    • Forest and Range Practices Act
    • Would like the City to use the “Trails Strategy for British Columbia” link on the City website
    • Council provided information to Mr. Bennett in regards to the City Grant-in-Aid process directing questions and inquiries to the Finance Department

    Mr. Bennett asked that staff work on building the Trails Connecting the Interface Trails
     

  • UNFINISHED BUSINESS

  •  Council provide a grant of five thousand ($5,000) dollars to the Merritt & District Chamber of Commerce in support of Forestry Week to be funded by the Community Initiative budget 
  • Council provide a grant of six thousand ($6,000) dollars to the Nicola Valley Arts Council in support of their 2016 operating year to be funded by the Grant-in-Aid budget

NEW BUSINESS

  • City provide a grant-in-aid in the amount of three thousand ($3,000) dollars to the Merritt & District Minor Hockey Association to assist with costs for the Peewee team to attend the Provincials March 12-18, 2016

    REPORTS FROM COUNCIL

  • Councillor Christopherson attended the hospital meeting; the Figure Skating Club’s first carnival and commented that  it has been one (1) year since the passing of past Councillor Harry Kroeker
  • Councillor Norgaard acknowledged International Women’s Day and attended the mental health and action meeting discussing the Detox entre in Merritt
  • Councillor Prowal attended one (1) day of the BC Winter Games; the Tourism webinar; the open house hosted by Mr. Dan Albas, MP and is pleased with the CAO report and the participation from management staff 
  • Councillor Goetz provided the latest gas buddy prices; toured the new fire truck; observed the road hockey challenge in the Lacrosse Box and congratulated Betty Doberstein on receiving the Caring Canadian Award from the Governor General of Canada 
  • Councillor Baker commented on the informative presentation hosted by MP Dan Albas and the last Police Committee meeting
  • Councillor Brown attended the Age Friendly open house; Economic Development webinar; March 02nd budget meeting and the Dr. “walk-in” conference
  • Mayor Menard congratulated Betty Doberstein on receiving the Caring Canadian Award; acknowledged International Women’s Day; commented on the one (1) year anniversary of past Councillor Harry Kroeker’s passing; attended the Age-Friendly open house and a meeting in Vernon with BC Transit and budget meetings.  Mayor Menard was invited to an NVIT meeting; hosted drop-in sessions; attended the new program from Telus and the Curling Club meeting
