PUBLIC INPUT

THAT Council allow “Bass Coast” to say hello during Public Input.   Bass Coast invited Council to a walk-through of the Bass Coast Festival grounds on July 06, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.

Ms. Rose Grant – 8.3 Request for Financial Aid for Nicola Valley Minor Lacrosse Association
Ms. Grant explained that the Lacrosse Peewee Team is asking for a donation to attend the Provincials in Prince George and the Lacrosse Bantam Team is asking for a donation for travelling expenses to Nanaimo.
The total cost for the Nicola Valley Minor Lacrosse Association teams to travel is thirteen thousand seven hundred ($13,700) dollars.

GENERAL MATTERS - Delegations and Recognitions

Ms. Jean Kiegerl, Vice-President, Nicola Valley Community Arts Council shared their mid-year report including:
• Support arts within the community
• Fortunate to have an art gallery for such a small community
• Donations and grants
• New events and programming
• New online ticketing
• One hundred seventy-five (175) members
o Requested Elected Officials to become members at no cost
• New website includes online donations and membership payments

NEW BUSINESS

THAT Council accept the City of Merritt 2016 Annual Report as presented

THAT Council resolves to award the Tender for the Coldwater Avenue Improvement Upgrades to BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd., in the amount of one million nine hundred ninety-four thousand eight hundred sixty-six ($1,994,866) dollars excluding applicable taxes for the base work;
AND THAT the Mayor and Corporate Officer be authorized to execute the contract documents on behalf of the City

THAT Council recognizes the achievement and provides their best wishes to the Nicola Valley Minor Lacrosse Association (NVMLA) teams participating at the Provincial playoffs this year;
AND THAT Council direct staff to include a request for the NVMLA to apply during the fall Grant in Aid intake for future requests of this nature

THAT Council support the Nicola Valley Minor Lacrosse Association (NVMLA) with a six thousand ($6,000) dollar donation to be funded through Council Contingency for the Peewee and Bantam teams to attend the 2017 Provincial playoffs

Councillor Norgaard made the following Notice of Motion:  THAT the City provide a letter of support to the Arts Council in their grant application

Councillor Brown made the following Notice of Motion:  THAT the City review ways to create opportunities for more rental suites to be made available; AND THAT incentives be reviewed with the possibility of providing ownership buy-in to register secondary suites

REPORTS FROM COUNCIL

  • Councillor Goetz provided the latest Gas Buddy prices, commented that the boulevard on Nicola Avenue looks great and congratulated Bobby Garcia on his musical achievement.
  • Councillor Baker attended the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Conference and commented that the boulevard on Nicola Avenue looks great.
  • Councillor Christopherson attended a Community Theatre meeting, Community Consultation for Health Care forum, Aboriginal Day Festivities, Canada 150 meeting, Environment Committee meeting and thanked Councillor Norgaard for assisting with the Community Consultation for Health Care meeting.
  • Councillor Prowal attended the Environment Committee meeting, Special Council meeting, Legion Week luncheon, swim meet on behalf of Mayor Menard, reminded everyone to not leave animals in vehicles, reminded Council the Adopt-a-Road clean-up is June 29, 2017, advised that the theme for Bass Coast this year is “space” and suggested the Logger sports carving for the City be a “coyote”.
  • Councillor Norgaard attended the Community Consultation for Health Care forum and debriefing session and National Aboriginal Day events.
  • Mayor Menard attended the Search & Rescue training event, Special Council meeting, met with MLA Jackie Tegart, attended Aboriginal Day event, toured the terminal in Ashcroft, and attended the ATV Parade and the Ride to Survive event which has one hundred (100) riders. 
  • Councillor Brown attended the Community Futures Annual General meeting, Community Consultation for Health Care forum and debriefing session, Special Council meeting, requested clarification of “FireSmart” and issued a challenge to Council and staff to be kind to strangers this week.
