GENERAL MATTERS - Delegations and Recognitions
 
Ms. Sarah Simon, Flood Safety Engineer, Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations presented to Council the history and main purposes of the Nicola Lake Dam including:
• The dam was built in 1927 and taken over by the province in the early 1980’s and was rebuilt by the province in 1986
• The main purposes for the dam was for irrigation and fisheries
Ms. Simon presented provided some statistics from the operation of the dam including:
• Reservoir elevation
• Inflows and outflows
• Total monthly inflows
• Total freshet inflow
Ms. Simon also advised:
• The flow is dependent on the snow pack and weather conditions
• The dam will not prevent floods
• The dam was not designed to hold a large capacity of water
Guidance and recommendations for next steps would be to have a complete study completed and determination of the risks.

THAT the City purchase a “Chute Sponsorship” in the amount of two thousand ($2,000) dollars funded from the Economic Development advertising budget, for a full back page ad in the 2018 Nicola Valley Pro-Rodeo program guide

REPORTS FROM COUNCIL
  • Councillor Brown attended three (3) Friday night markets, the RCMP Musical Ride; the Finance & Audit Committee meeting; and advised there were Forestry tents in Central Park.
  • Councillor Goetz provided the latest Gas Buddy prices; visited the Forestry crews at the Merritt Airport; attended the National High School Rodeo, Friday night markets, Music at Spirit Square and Rockin’ River Music Festival. 
  • Councillor Norgaard attended a Food Action meeting and a Detox and Treatment Centre meeting and gave kudos to the Fire Departments and Forestry for getting to the fire in Lower Nicola as fast as they did. 
  • Councillor Baker expressed kudos for the construction of the Nicola Valley Hospital & Health Centre and the Community Garden.
  • Councillor Prowal attended the RCMP Musical Ride and the High School Rodeo and gave kudos to the Fire Departments and Forestry for getting to the fire in Lower Nicola as fast as they did.
  • Councillor Christopherson attended the Finance & Audit Committee meeting, a Health Care meeting, RCMP Musical Ride and the Friday night markets.
  • Mayor Menard attended a Merritt Centennials Board meeting; welcomed Judge Gillespie; attended the National High School Rodeo as well as meetings with the Wellness Society and Liberty Construction; hosted Mayor Drop-In sessions; attended the RCMP Musical Ride, the Canadian Country Music Heritage Society interactive video; advised of the film crew working with the TNRD Film Commission on a commercial in Merritt; attended the Centennials hockey camp, the Finance & Audit Committee meeting, the Friday night markets and met with the Department of Highways.
