Mayor Presents Good Samaritan Award

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at approximately 1:00 pm on the outskirts of Vancouver, Evin Baird, a 21-year-old City of Merritt Lifeguard and First Aid Attendant, witnessed a dramatic incident. An elderly woman (74 years old) lost control of her vehicle, hydroplaning on the wet pavement and causing it to roll into the highway median strip. Without hesitation, Evin pulled over and rushed to the scene. The woman’s vehicle was filling with exhaust fumes. In his effort to assist, he broke through the windshield, sustaining deep cuts to his hands. Although the woman suffered minor bruises and cuts, she complained of back pain. Evin carefully held her in a spine-restricting position for over an hour and a half until the fire department arrived, providing her with consistent calming reassurance during this traumatic event.

The City of Merritt and Council commend Evin for his selfless, humanitarian assistance during this medical emergency, which went beyond his regular duties. His heroic efforts in this major incident, both as a member of the public and a trained First Aid attendant, exemplify the honorable character that is esteemed, appreciated, and celebrated by every member of the City of Merritt, British Columbia.

In recognition of this act of humanity, we are proud to present Evin with the City’s Good Samaritan Award, honoring his exceptional efforts. The Good Samaritan Award was presented to Evin at the regular Council meeting on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. Please join us in acknowledging Evin.
