Merritt Invests in Airport Economic Development
Thanks to the Province of BC‘s Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP), the City of Merritt has been awarded $500,000 to go towards infrastructure improvements at Merritt Regional Airport. This $520,000 project involves grading eight municipally-owned lots in the Merritt Airport Area to make them more investment ready for interested business/industry operators. The lots are currently zoned Airport Commercial which provides several opportunities for business development in the Transportation, Warehousing, Distribution, and Tourism industry sectors. The project is to be started no later than January 31, 2024 and completed by March 31st, 2025. This project is intended to not only bring investment and development, but also to create jobs for our residents.
“This project will go a long ways towards demonstrating that the City of Merritt is investment-ready,” says Mayor Michael Goetz. “The City is ideally situated in a regional hub, which makes it the perfect landing spot for transportation throughout the province. This project begins the process of paving the way towards greater prosperity for the community.”
The Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP) was developed by the Government of British Columbia to support rural economic development projects that promote economic capacity building, economic diversification, resilience, clean economy opportunities, and infrastructure development.
The B.C. government has allocated $33 million annually for three years for rural and remote community projects, including grants for capacity building and infrastructure projects, to BC communities throughout the province. A portion of the funding is dedicated to communities affected by changes in the forest sector.
