What to Do

Things to Do in Merritt

Summer, Winter, Spring or Fall…there many activities to do in Merritt.

Merritt is a wonderful place for outdoor enthusiasts. In winter the cross country skiing is superb and there are many snowmobiling trails.

In summer, Nicola Lake will lure you for a cooling dip, or skimming the surface waters via windsurfer or sailboat.
There are two nine hole golf courses - challenging on the course, yet easy on the wallet.

Spring, Summer and Fall

Hike or bike through our beautiful Nicola Valley.

One of our mottos is "A Lake a Day as Long as You Stay". This area is known for some of the best flyfishing in the world. Spin casters are welcome too of course! There are a number of camping areas around, including Claybanks RV Park right in the heart of Merritt, on the banks of the Coldwater River.

Hunting? No matter your game or hunting preference, Merritt has you covered.

This is Ranch Country - check out historical Douglas Lake Ranch and the Quilchena Hotel. Of course in cowboy country there's ample opportunity for horseback riding for both the beginer and expect alike.  More into being a cowboy spectator?  Check out Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo, an annual event combined with the area fall fair.

Into horsepower of a different sort? Merritt has a Speedway as well as annual Rally Car races.

Into Country music? Merritt Walk of Stars has branded the history of country music into the sidewalks and onto the buildings here in the Country Music Capital of Canada – Merritt, BC.  Over the years hundreds of Canadian and International Country Music Artists have performed in Merritt. Those artists have permanently left their mark on country music history by placing their handprints and signatures in concrete stars.  Today more than 100 bronzed stars and dozens of large scale murals are displayed on the Merritt Walk of Stars in downtown Merritt, BC, Canada.

Visit the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame - In 2012, the Canadian Country Music Heritage Society (CCMHS) was formed to provide a venue for the display of artifacts related to inductees to the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.  This opportunity is facilitated through key relationships with the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) and the National Music Centre (NMC).  The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame is located in downtown Merritt, open for visitors to view the stars of Country Music.

The history of country music celebrations in Merritt and the Nicola Valley is highly visible in two other important community attractions: The Merritt Walk of Stars; and, the Country Legends Murals.  The Merritt Walk of Stars features handprints (and one footprint) and signatures of country music top international performers.  What began in 1993 is now a comfortable community walking tour with over 50 bronze plaques on display.  The Country Legends Murals (a community youth project) are seen throughout the downtown and represent a wonderful thematic variation for renowned Master Muralist Michelle Loughery.

Into history? We've got it….from our rich ranching history to historical buildings right within town.  Be sure to visit the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives.

Indoor Activites?

Merritt has a first class Aquatic Centre with a fitness gym, the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena (home to the Centennials!), a Curling Rink, and a bowling alley.  The Merritt Civic Centre can accommodate functions of any size…from weddings to conventions…and is home to a number community classes.  For a complete list of Civic Centre activities check out our Leisure Services Guide, available at City Hall, Aquatic Centre or Civic Centre.

What else to do? Merritt has a wide variety of clubs for kick boxing, girl guides and boy scouts, badminton and bowling, tennis, flying, soccer, lawn bowling, hockey, softball, slo-pitch, model railways, swimming, bingo, snowmobiling, stock cars, volleyball, Nordic skiing, dogs, rods and guns, 4-H, and taekwando…..

Hockey!  Merritt is home to the oldest continuously running BC Hockey League club.  Junior hockey games are fast paced, entertaining and still affordable family fun.  Check out the Merritt Centennials and be part of the action!
