Merritt — April 19, 2023 —  The City of Merritt’s Chief Administrative Officer, Sean Smith, will be leaving the City of Merritt to take on an exciting new opportunity in the private sector, starting July 7, 2023.

Sean has served the City of Merritt since 2017, initially working as the Director of Corporate Services, then taking on additional responsibilities as Deputy CAO in 2019, and finally assuming the role of Chief Administrative Officer in August 2020.  Prior to his work with the City, Sean worked as a lawyer for a municipal law firm in Victoria, BC.  Sean holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Victoria and an Economics (BA) degree from the University of British Columbia.

Sean expresses his appreciation to staff, Mayor and Council. “I’ve been blown away by the creativity and dedication of this team. Together, we’ve tackled some tough challenges and celebrated some amazing successes. We’ve weathered storms (unfortunately, I mean this literally), found new solutions to old problems, and always managed to keep a smile on our faces, even when we were knee-deep in water or deskwork.”

“To Mayor Goetz, you are the leader this community needs.  You care so much for the people in this community and are always content to roll up your sleeves to help no matter the size of an issue.  Council, I have been so impressed by your listening, comraderie, and your ability to approach serious issues in a lighthearted way.  This will serve you and the community well.

Mayor Goetz adds, “We greatly appreciate Sean’s dedication to making a positive difference in our community and his continuous commitment to exceptional service. His hard work during and after the flood has put the City of Merritt in a position that other communities can only dream about. His dedication, boundless knowledge, and enthusiasm sets him apart from all others.  We have very much enjoyed working with Sean and he will be greatly missed.”

In addition to taking on a role in the private sector, Sean will be taking on an entrepreneurial venture with his family, giving him more flexibility to nurture what matters most.  He adds,  “I am confident that this staff team and Council will continue to do great things together.  Know that wherever I am, I will always be rooting for you and the City of Merritt.”

Council and staff will be conducting search to find a new CAO.
